Actor Demo Reels

Lots of people do actor reels. Not many do them well. I have been doing actor reels for 6 years, and have seen plenty of good and baaaadd reels! I am also a director, and my wife is a former agent, so I have sat and watched reels for hours.

The two major mistakes I saw over and over? Too much fancy editing and crazy transitions. If someone watches your reel and talks about the cool editing...

That's a problem.

Second, too much focus on famous costars, and not enough on the actor we want to see. It's important to acknowledge that you were in a nice scene with someone well-known, but the focus should be YOU.  Your famous co-stars have their own promotion.

They don't need your help.

My philosophy of editing reels for the actor is very simple: Keep the focus on the actor, don't distract with fancy editing.  I put a reel together to grab the viewer's attention and leave them with something to remember - about the actor!

I post proof edits online, and send you a link so you can watch and give me feedback on what you like and don't like - you can actually approve the final cut without ever leaving home!
